EVANGELISM OR CHRISTIAN ZIONISM
10. EVANGELISM OR CHRISTIAN ZIONISM July 18th, 2008Firstly, let’s learn about Zionism. Zionism is Jewish Nationalism of which intellectual foundations were laid in the 19th century by an Austrian journalist and intellectual named Theodor Herzl in the 19th century. Although it is not directly a religious trend, its base is the ideology of world dominance based in Jerusalem according to understanding of “people chosen by God” and ” Promised Lands” contained in Torah. Although it is not an ideology totally based on religion, it has turned into a trend embraced by all groups of Jewish community, whether religious or secular, due to such basic principles. Theodor Herzl, in 1896, wrote a book called “Jewish State-Der Judenstaat” describing the base of this trend, and organized the gathering of “the 1st World Zionist Congress” in Basel, Switzerland to ensure that Ideals of Zionism become widespread among the Jewish community. T. Herzl, by reference to Torah, said at this congress , “the northern borders of the Jewish State we will establish will be in the Capadocia Mountains and the southern borders will at the Suez Channel, our motto will be Palestine of David and Solomon.” Another meeting would organized in Basel , in 1985, 87 years after the first one, for the same purpose. But, this time, the organizers would be Christian, not Jewish, its name would be “the 1st Christian Zionism Congress .” So, Zionism would be embraced by not only Jews but also a group of Christians.
When it comes to Evangelism, the word Evangelism has been derived from the German Evangelium, German equivalent of Bible (Greek Eu-aggelion) which means good news. Although Evangelism is the name of mission for announcing Bible that is the word of God, the name Evangelic was used for groups supporting Martin Luther who founded Protestantism in Germany. Protestant Lutherian churches founded in Germany are defined as Evangelic Church. Since Protestants do base their education on Holy Bible alone, this definition means orientation toward the Holy Book. Today, definition of evangelic is used to define the fundamentalist groups living in the USA. Evangelic Christianity is used to differentiate the fundamentalist -radical Protestants from Liberal Protestantism adhering to the same mission.
Protestantism was born as a result of movement of return to Holy Bible started by Martin Luther (1483-1546) against the authority of Catholic Church and Pope. Protestants accepted the Holy Bible as the only book for Christianity. Thus, they deny the indisputability of Pope. They do not have spiritual leaders as is the case in Catholicism and Orthodoxy. They oppose intermediation between God and God’s servants. Each believer is a religion man.
They argue that, based on a sentence by Pavlus “you have been saved thanks to belief in God “, man’s salvation is based on belief alone, not the ceremonies. Based on the same thoughts, they opposed to sale of Indulgence and priests’ authority to forgive the sins. They deny the icons and sculptures in the churches as a sign of return to paganism since they are denied in the Holy Books . Martin Luther and the other reformists are actually opposed to Orthodoxy although they fight against Catholicism that is the dominant sect in Europe since they rebelled in Europe. They deny the indisputability of Pope and want everyone to adhere to the Holy Book. They want each believer to understand the Bible and read it in their own languages. Catholics requires the Holy Bible be read only in Latin, while the Orthodox requires the Holy Bible be read only in Greek. I wanted to point out one issue with these explanations. In Protestantism, return to the Holy Book has begun . But, there is a significant difference. . Until the 16th century, in the World of Christianity, Bible was the primary Holy Book. Although they accept the Torah as a Holy Book, Torah had lost its importance. After onset of the Protestantism, Torah became as important as the Bible. Thus, following Protestantism, a return toward the Jewish routes of Christianity has begun. Before Protestantism, for several generations Jews were held responsible for punishment of Jesus Christ with death on crucifix and they ware treated with great hostility as killers of God. During the visit of Theodor Herzl, founder of Zionism, to Pope Pius X, in 1904, to ask support for their requests from Palestine , Pope gave a harsh reply and said,
“We will not be happy with such action. The Jews do not recognize Jesus Christ as a prophet. Therefore, we do not recognize them in return. If you come to Palestine and make your people settle there, we will be ready to baptize all o you together with all of our priests and churches.”26
Despite all counter-actions of church, State of Israel was established in 1948, but Vatican refused to recognize this State . There are some people who claim that recognition of Israel by Vatican was a result of an obligation due to a conspiracy. In 1947, some religious inscriptions dating back to the era of Jesus Christ were found in the area around Kumran, Palestine and these were seized by Israel. Content of most of such inscriptions were not disclosed for a long time. Only one-fourth of these was published until 1993. Some of these inscriptions belonged to Christianity and contained ideas contrary to current teachings. 1989 Prof. Robert EİSENMAN who was specialist in this field said in his interview published in leading U.S. and Israeli newspapers that Kumran Parchment Papers were under monopoly of a biased group, a big part of them was not disclosed, the texts related to Christianity were not published and the independent scientists should be given access to such papers.27Afterwards, it has been told that these parchment papers became subject of negotiations between Vatican and Israel. With the information secretly conveyed by Israel to Prof. Robert Eisenman, Vatican was forced to recognize Israel. But, explanations made by the parchment papers were so limited.28 As can be understood based on the foregoing matters, a large community of Christianity (Catholicism and Orthodoxy ) did not recognize the State of Israel once it was established, let alone contributing to establishment process as a miracle of Bible.
So, Christianity saw a huge transformation following Protestantism. First, Torah was sanctified, then so was the Jews. According to the Protestants, the Jews acquitted from being killer of GOD, became the “CHOSEN PEOPLE” of GOD and were entitled to “PROMISED LAND -ERETZ ISRAEL”. When Torah is taken as basis, it is inevitable to rely upon the following expressions .
12:3 I will bless those who bless you, “but the one who treats you lightly I must curse, and all the families of the earth will bless one another by your name.” (Torah-Genesis)
Aiming for Torah gave rise to tendency of going for a worldly life, instead of a spiritual life, like the Bible, and fort he present world, rather than the other world. This way of life encouraged accumulation of assets, thereby, giving birth to Capitalism
“61:5 “Foreigners will take care of your sheep; foreigners will work in your fields and vineyards.
61:6 You will be called, ‘the Lord’s priests, servants of our God.’You will enjoy the wealth of nations and boast about the riches you receive from them.”(İşaiah)
The countries where Protestantism flourished saw drastic developments and became rich and took a major part of the world under their control. Thanks to these countries, the Jews easily gained access to “LANDS PROMISED” by GOD. Martin Luther, in 1523, criticized the attitude of Catholic Church that looked down on the Jews for several centuries and wrote his book entitled “Dass Jesus Christus ein Geborener Jude Sei”- “Jesus Christ was Born as a Jew .“ By saying that Jews were absolutely right in rejecting the Catholic religion, he said “If I was a Jew, I would rather turn into a pig than accepting Catholicism .“ Another sentence showing his interest for the Jews by Martin Luther who wrote a book entitled “Jesus Christ was Born as a Jew” is as follows :
“Jews are the relatives, cousins and brothers of our God. I am talking to the Catholics; when they are tired of calling me unbeliever, they can call me Jew.” (History Of Anti-Semitizm, Leon Poliakov, page 221)
The church authorities qualified him as “semi-Jew” (semi-Judaeus). The other Protestant leaders such as Calvin, Zwingli, Servetus were also blamed for turning into Jew. For the Kabalist Jewish thinkers in particular, Martin Luther was a secret Jew and they had accepted him as a reformist who would be able to change the hostile thoughts of Christians for the Jews.
“Kabalist Abraham B. Eliezer ha-Levi said that Luther was a secret Jew who was trying to educate the Christians gradually.”(Encyclopedia Judaica, volume 14, page 21)
“The devastating strike of Luther on Roman Catholicism was first accepted by the Jews.” (Encyclopedia Judaica, volume 11, page 584)
“Reform movements in Christianity were affected by the Jewish literature and philosophy. Some groups became their enemies for they turned into semi-Jews. Most of them were linked with Torah. Therefore these movements gave rise to new translations of Torah.” (The Universal Jewish Encyclopedia, Christianity, page 185)
Robert H. Williams who wrote the book called “Ultimate World Order” as a criticism for the “Jewish Utopia” write on pages 64-65 about how the Jews sent their children to the Christian schools to influence Protestantism. Puritanism that was established by Calvinist William Tyndale which was a Protestant movement in UK was British Judaism. These turned their face to Torah more than Lutherian Protestant movements that were loyal to Bible, in terms of form though, and started to live like the Jews. To the extent that they resurrected the tradition of crimson for men and Şabat (ban on working on Saturdays ), and accept Jewish names. Encylopaedia Judaica talks about Puritanism under the title of “Judaizers”. This term is explained as follows: “Judaizer: A person who practices part of all of Jewish religion or claims to be Jewish although she/he is not a Jew .” The book says the following for the Puritans which are categorized in this class:
Along with the strengthening of Puritanism in UK and North Atlantic, including USA, studies about Torah and judaizing movements started. This movement flourished further and ended up with using Hebrew, basing the Constitution on Torah and celebration of Sabbath according to Jewish religion.29
