MESSIAH EXPECTED BY THE END OF 70 WEEKS YEARS SPECIFIED IN DANIEL BOOK
15. MESSIAH EXPECTED BY THE END OF 70 WEEKS YEARS SPECIFIED IN DANIEL BOOK July 21st, 2008
Everyone knows that the real prophecy about the expected Messiah is specified in part 9 of Daniel. However, the efforts of the Bible writers to make use of Torah in a quite clumsy manner gave rise to a great chaos and caused a vicious circle. In Yeremya part of Torah, it is written that Babel exile would last for 70 years (Yeremya-29:10). Those who cannot correlate this prophecy with the arrival of Messiah (Jesus Christ) are making several comments over the following prophecies of Daniel about the arrival of Messiah:
“9:24 “Seventy weeks have been determined concerning your people and your holy city to put an end to rebellion, to bring sin to completion, to atone for iniquity, to bring in perpetual righteousness, to seal up the prophetic vision, and to anoint a most holy place.
9:25 So know and understand: From the issuing of the command to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until an anointed one, a prince arrives, there will be a period of seven weeks and sixty-two weeks. It will again be built, with plaza and moat, but in distressful times.
9:26 Now after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one will be cut off and have nothing. As for the city and the sanctuary, the people of the coming prince will destroy them. But his end will come speedily like a flood.Until the end of the war that has been decreed there will be destruction.
9:27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one week. But in the middle of that week he will bring sacrifices and offerings to a halt.On the wing of abominations will come one who destroys, until the decreed end is poured out on the one who destroys.” (Old Test.-Daniel)
In Daniel-9, this detailed information about the Messiah is given by Angel Gabriel. The most well-known comment is as follows. The following pretext was created by saying that prophecy of Jeremiah did not come true. The Jews did not repent and turn your face to God. The punishment is increases 7 times in the event they do not repent. Therefore, the exile is deemed to have been extended to 70 years x 7= 490 years. In this case, the comment considering 70 weeks prophecy of Daniel as 70×7=490 years is the most well-known one. So, each day is deemed to equal to 1 year or each period of 7 weeks are deemed to equal to 7 years. Here, arrival of Daniel Messiah and establishment of Jerusalem is 7+62=69 weeks, that equals to 69×7=483 years. From perspective of the Jews, 1 year over 360 days equals to 483×360=173.880 days. When it comes to foundation of Jerusalem. When it is assumed that order for foundation was given by Persian King Artahşasta in B.C. 444 on March 5th, period between A.D. 33 and March 5th =476 years. This time range equals to 476×365,242=173.855 over 365 days in 1 year. If we add, on March 5th, to March 30th (5 days before Fısıh festival, in B.C. 33, Fısıh was on April 3rd), for the arrival of Messiah into Jerusalem as King (Yuhanna-12:1-12) 25 days, 173.855+25=173.880 days is the result. Based on these assumptions, by the end of 69 weeks of Daniel, Jerusalem will have been founded and the expected Messiah will have arrived. This calculation seems to be correct if we force it with some pre-assumptions.
The exile in Babel had started in B..C. 586 and the foundation of Temple marking the end of exile was in B.C. 515. 586-515=71 years. In Yeremya-29:10, it is said that the Babel exile will last for 70 years. This indicates that time range given in Jeremiah as exile is correct. Let’s look at the Tanakh:
21-To fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years.
22-Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,
We see another mistake of interpreting here. So, the exile was not extended 7 times. The 70 weeks of time range specified in Daniel is related to arrival of Messiah. Of course, since every other person spoke of Messiah at hard times in order to encourage the Jews, 70 later salvation from captivity had taken place, as described in Jeremiah , yet the expected Jewish Savior had not arrived. In this case, people started looking for Messiah of Daniel and 70 years gave been extended 7 times and 70 weeks have been converted into week-year. However, there is another problem with prophecy of Daniel. Daniel says Messiah will arrive 7 weeks or 49 years after the order for founding Jerusalem and Jerusalem shall be founded by the end of 62 weeks, and Messiah shall be killed. So, we can conclude that Messiah shall be killed 7+62=69 week-year, that is, 69×7=483 years later. So, the Messiah shall live for 483 years. Actually, it is not written that 7 weeks shall be added to 62 weeks. By the way, there is a deficit of 70-69= 1 week, that is, 7 years. Because Jesus Christ was expected to return by the end of 70 weeks in prophecy of Daniel. But, the Messiah will be killed by the end of 69th week according to the foregoing. Also, there are two dates about birth of Jesus Christ in the Bible and such dates cannot be zero. According to Matthew Bible, B.C. 6, while according to Luke, A.D. 6 (hz. İsa Hris.-177). Since he will arrive in Jerusalem at the age of 33 in such case, the date of arrival may not be A.D. 33. This is the real reason. Another comment by Daniel is as follows; if we assume return of Jewish Leader Ezra to Jerusalem from Babel at B.C. 458 and baptizing of Messiah in A.D. 26 as appearance of Messiah, the period between two dates equals to 483 years. By the way, there is no separation of solar year and moon year. This means 69 week-years. 7 years after such date , the Messiah was killed on crucifix. Thus, the period of 70 weeks is completed (Armageddon keha-27). Although this one seems more plausible since it takes into consideration the entire period of 70 weeks, it cannot be explained that Messiah shall arrive in 7 weeks. Also, we should not forget that Messiah shall be killed by the end of 62 weeks. The calculation of 70 weeks seems to be correct but we cannot derive the meaning Messiah shall be killed 70 weeks later from the prophecy that reads as “En kutsalı meshetmek için 70 hafta saptanmıştır“. According to pre-milleniumists, when Messiah is killed by the end of 69 weeks, the final week does not start right away. This final week, that is 7 years, will begin upon the second arrival of Messiah when he lifts the church to the Sky prior to Turbulation. Thus, 70 years shall be completed. It is evident that this one is also a made-up comment. So, we can see the essence of these prophecies. It is not possible to derive a conclusion from any one of them. Actually, some parts of prophecy in Daniel have come true. Let’s see the details of the last one week that will be full of trouble:”13 Sonra kutsal bir varlığın konuştuğunu duydum. Başka kutsal bir varlık ona, “He asked “until when what happens in this vision –the first vision concerning daily supply, uprising that brought destruction, crushing of holy place and the army – shall continue?:
8:14 He said to me, “To 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary will be put right again.” (Old Test.-Daniel)
“12:11 From the time that the daily sacrifice is removed and the abomination that causes desolation is set in place, there are 1,290 days.
12:12 Blessed is the one who waits and attains to the 1,335 days.
12:13 But you should go your way until the end. You will rest and then at the end of the days you will arise to receive what you have been allotted.” (Old Test-Daniel)
2300 days equal to around 7 years. In B.C.169, Antiochus Epiphanes, the King of Seleucid Empire, besieged Jerusalem. First, he agreed to enter into a pact of peace. Then, he breached the pact and burnt the city down. He plundered the Temple and banned worshipping in Temple for three and half years, and turned the Temple into a pagan temple by sacrificing a pig every day. So, placing the disgusting thing in temple corresponding to 1290-1335 days and overall invasion corresponding to 2300 days came true. There are some people who comment as mentioned above, but there is still a problem. These 7 years and three and half years were for the breakup of these 4 kingdoms. So, this was for the breakup of Roman era. So, it coincides with the demolition of Jerusalem and Temple in A.D. 70. We should bear that in our mind. So, it is not possible to derive a clear conclusion. Again with regards to this issue, W.Miller who was among the pioneers of Adventist movement and Evangelic theology around 1840 in the USA commented on these prophecies and estimated the return date of Jesus Christ at around 1844. W. Miller assumes the above 2300 days as 2300 years and makes the following comment; by assuming B.C. 457- 7 weeks-B.C. 408-62 weks-A.D.27-1 week –A.D. 34-1810 years -A.D. 1844 B.C. 457 as order for foundation of Jerusalem, by adding 2300 years, he calculated the year A.D. 1844. He places the 70 week-years between these two dates based on certain assumptions. He defines A.D.. 27 as the date for baptizing of Jesus Christ and commencement of duty, A.D. 31 crucifying, 1 week , that is, 7 years later, A.D. 34 as the end of special grace time for Israel. Of course, these assumptions are not fully consistent with the prophecies of Daniel.42 It is really hard to find reason in them. Still, despite some deficiencies,
It is evident Torah is attempting to describe the era of Jesus Christ. Daniel is the only part of Torah which provided prophecies supported by the figures related to future. Although there are some inconsistencies in some of these prophecies, they are roughly the most realistic prophecies about Jesus Christ in Torah. Daniel was one of the Jews exiled to Babel. So, he lived in Babel , yet he was appointed as an advisor in the palace of Nebukadnessar. He remained in the Palace until Persian King Koreş burnt Babel down. One significant difference of Daniel book from the rest is the fact that it contains no longing for Judah and Israel or establishment of Jerusalem or Temple. Also, no expression as to the fact that Babel will be devastated and no appraisal for Persian King Koreş who saved the Jews from captivity are available in the book. There are three prophecies repeated three times about the era of Messiah of distant future, that is, Jesus Christ.
Daniel gives details about north-south (Syria-Egypt) wars in Part 11. It is so long that northern Kings win 4 times while southern kings win 2 times. Of course, since these kingdoms (whoever they may be) are Syria and Egypt, ech war damages the Beautiful Land (Judah) and Jerusalem is invaded twice. No correlation was made with a specific historical event about this prophecy. These prophecies did not come true. Given the fact, since may parts of Torah talk about an enemy in the North, people commenting on the foregoing suggest that this country might be SOVIET RUSSIA that is cooperating with the Arabs against Israel. Upon breakup of Soviet Russia, this prophecy was eliminated too.
Some wise men evaluating the Daniel Book disagree that this book was written in B.C. 6th century. Since the prophecies written in the book until B.C. 164 seem to be consistent while subsequent ones have a lower rate of realization, specialists suggest that this book was written around B.C. 164. Daniel-5:31 suggests that the king who devastated Babel was Darius, King of Med. In many part of Torah, it was Persian King Koreş that devastated Babel. The fact that book cannot give a correct date for an event that took place during its time, yet gives correct dates about the events in B.C. 164 gave rise to suspicions about this Book. Also, around B.C. 180, the fact that the list of Jewish Heroes formed by Ben Sira does not include the name Daniel makes us believe that this book was not written on behalf of Daniel before B.C. 164. However, the list created in B.C. 100 as specified in Torah, 1 Maccabiler, Chapters 2 59-60 contains Daniel and three friends of his.43This must be the most accurate list. Such case may explain the lack of any explanations in the Daniel book about Babel and Persian Kingdom.
