TO WHAT EXTENT NUMERIC VALUE OF NUMBERS IS CORRECT?
17.TO WHAT EXTENT NUMERIC VALUE OF NUMBERS IS CORRECT? July 22nd, 2008While Old Test. and Bible use animal figures for the prophecies related to events in future, for time, numeric time predictions are available in terms of day, weeks and years. We touched upon the prophecies of Daniel book that uses numeric prophecies most. So, it is not possible to derive a clear conclusion from such time ranges. In such case, is there an actual or encrypted time range given in Daniel and the other prophecies? Although it has been centuries since the time they were written, it is evident that no conclusion can be derived from such time In such case, we come up with the question whether the numbers given in the Holy Books about the various issues are really correct or not. It is worth attention that, when a number is given in Old Test. and Bible about various subjects, particularly number 7 and its derivatives such as 70, 700, 7000 are given as if there was a generalization. In the expressions smaller than seven, three and half is used. Number 7 or the expression seventh is mentioned in Old Test. for 363 times, and in Bible for 91 times, 35 times in other parts of Revelation Book and 56 times for Revelations Book. What I think is that this number was used as a symbolism, instead of expressing a real number. In this regard, when evaluating the prophecies, we see that a small quantity is described using the number 7 while the bigger quantities are described using numbers such as 70, 7000 or 70000. W sometimes encounter 12 or its multiples (Vahiy-4:4, 7:4-8, 21:12-17). It is hard to understand the accuracy of several invasion or victories of Jews as depicted is because Old Test. was reviewed from time to time (B.C. 400 finally ) and mistakes were corrected while re-writing. This is proven by the fact that Daniel Book, the most popular book of prophecy, was reviewed in A.C. 164, instead of B.C. 6th century when Daniel lived. This may because Old Test., apart from being a holy book, is actually Jewish history book. It is claimed that, together with religious texts, based on content of Jewish History, texts were adapted to date. Let’s listen to a specialist’s advice for a last comment;
“Therefore, when we encounter numbers in Bible, they might be symbolical. Particularly, the numbers seven, three and half and ten are symbolic numbers. Even if the numbers indicate the real time ranges, we cannot know to which time they belong. A number might be talking about days, weeks, months, decades. It might event be talking about different time ranges. Such case shall cause us some trouble in terms of calculating the twenty first century events. Most of the commonly held beliefs about end of time in the popular culture and popular literature are based on explanation of the numbers contained in the bible texts and it is evident that such numbers have symbolic meanings for the writers and readers of those texts.”46
The conclusion that may be derived from the foregoing is, many of the prophecies are nothing but fairy tales, let alone deriving conclusions about the future.
